What is RPL?

If you’re considering further studies or training, take a closer look at the skills that you already have and you might be surprised at how little time you need to get your qualifications. If you’re skilled enough, you may not even have to study at all and still obtain a qualification.

Let us help assess your RPL

RPL or Recognition of Prior Learning is an evaluation and formal acknowledgement of a person’s knowledge and skills gained through training and work experience. This is an important and cost-effective assessment process for people who want to study or undergo further skills training. Depending on the recognition result, one may be able to reduce the study time (sometimes, dramatically) needed to obtain certification for course completion.

How does RPL work?

Unlike other intricate forms of assessment, RPL is simple and straightforward. During the evaluation, a person is asked to demonstrate familiarity on specific tasks based on the skills and knowledge that they’ve acquired throughout their career.

The RPL process takes place at the beginning of a person’s intent for training or apprenticeship and can continue throughout the training program or course duration. Assessment can be done through observation in the workplace or training area, work samples, interviews, presentations, and documented evidence such as examinations.

Certain skills can help you get your desired qualifications if you have a good record of work experience. For instance, your work tenure in an office could help you obtain a certificate in business administration. Working in a bank could help you on your road to becoming qualified for a certification in financial management. Being a volunteer for outreach programs could pave the way for a certification in social work.

What is Credit Transfer?

A credit transfer recognises the formal study you’ve done at school or university. These school credentials can be used to assess whether or not you are eligible for your desired qualification. If you would like your school credits to be evaluated, you must accomplish and present certified copies of your certificates, awards, or qualifications that you have obtained throughout the course of your education.

Who performs RPL?

RPL is usually done by training institutions or providers in conjunction with employment centres. A registered assessor or moderator conducts the assessment.

Who can benefit from RPL?

Most people who undergo RPL are those who wish to finish their studies or pursue further education. These are:

  • People who wish to obtain a license within their industry so they can legally perform work in a particular role
  • People who want to re-train or improve their skills
  • People who are seeking further education
  • Students who which to obtain certification for their involvement in extra-curricular activities
  • Individuals who are unable to complete their requirements to obtain a certificate or college diploma
  • Unemployed people who wish to present their knowledge and skills to potential employers

Although RPL is an important assessment process to lessen the time you’d spend to complete a course or training, it is not a free ticket to give you instant certification with no efforts at all. It’s simply a necessary step when presenting your knowledge and skills for consideration. Recognition is given where credit is due. This means, your records will only be recognised if they fit the standards of the industry you want to work within.
