Trade Contractor Licensing in NSW

In NSW the governing body that regulates builders and tradespeople in the construction industry is the Office of Fair Trading (OFT).

The specific section of the web site that is most relevant to tradespeople can be found at the Office of Fair Trading for Tradespeople webpage.

In NSW it is not mandatory to undergo regular training to maintain your licence as a trade. However you must continue ongoing training to maintain your licence as a builder or pool builder.

To find out more about the NSW Builder CPD Points System please call 1300 855 713. Back to Basics have tailored programs that you can work through from home in order to meet these requirements.

“Do I need to have a licence in NSW to operate as a tradesperson?”

Yes, in NSW if you are an individual or company who wants to carry out work over $1000 in value (all costs including material, labour and GST) then you must hold the correct licence as determined by the Office of Fair Trading.

According to the Office of Fair Trading you need to have a Contractor Licence to carry out:

  • All residential building work over $1000 regardless of activity
  • All electrical wiring work
  • All plumbing, draining and gasfitting work
  • All air-conditioning and refrigeration work

“If I do need to have a licence to operate as a tradesperson, what training do I need to do in order to fulfill my requirements under the application?”

Besides your required technical qualifications, you do not need to undertake any additional course in order to obtain your licence. It is critical that you understand the qualifications required and it is wise to contact the Office of Fair Trading to clarify exactly what qualifications you need in order to match the licence you are seeking.

However, you may need to undergo ongoing training as part of the NSW Builder and Trades CPD Points System for Continuous Professional Development. To find out more please contact call 1300 855 713.
